预紧式安全带的特点是当汽车发生碰撞事故的一瞬间，乘员尚未向前移动时它会首先拉紧织带，立即将乘员紧紧地绑在座椅上，然后锁止织带防止乘员身体前倾，有效保护乘员的安全。预紧式安全带中起主要作用的卷收器与普通安全带不同，除了普通卷收器的收放织带功能外，还具有当车速发生急剧变化时，能够在0.1s左右加强对乘员的约束力，因此它还有控制装置和预拉紧装置。
