描述CelastrusL.南蛇藤属，卫矛科，50种，分布于热带和亚热带地区，我国约30种，广布于各省。藤状灌木；小枝具极明显的皮孔；叶互生；花小，杂性，绿白色，排成腋生或顶生的圆锥花序或总状花序；萼5裂；花瓣5，广展；花盘阔，凹陷；雄蕊5，着生于花盘的边缘；子房2－4室，每室有胚珠2颗；柱头3裂；蒴果室背开裂为3果瓣，开裂后轴状胎座宿存；种子有红色的假种皮。
