指儿童期咽扁桃体反复感染发炎而肥大。肥大的增殖体可大如核桃，妨碍鼻腔空气的流通，阻止鼻咽部分泌物的排出，堵塞咽鼓管口，影响中耳的通气与引流。患儿呈“增殖体面容”，张口呼吸、鼻根下陷、鼻翼萎缩，嘴唇甚厚、鼻唇沟变浅、上唇短而上翻、上门齿暴露突出、面容呆板、无表情，因呼吸困难可发生漏斗胸或鸡胸，夜晚睡眠不安。
