长序列气候要素观测值的有规律变化。气候变迁通过这种变化得以反映。人们在研究长期气候的基础上，提出多种气候周期，包括全球气候周期和某一地区的气候周期。例如，热带平流层风系变化的26个月周期、埃尔尼诺（El Nio）的3.5年周期、温度和降水等以35年为周期变化的布吕克纳周期等。与太阳活动有关的气候周期有5～6年、11年、22年、80～90年和 180年等周期。由于气象观测纪录年代的限制，较长的周期尚难以做到足够的重现，同时气候周期本身也不很严格。研究气候周期对于气候预测和预防气候灾害有重要意义。
