伦敦海事仲裁员协会仲裁规则（LMAA terms）规定仲裁庭有权对多方当事人争议进行合并仲裁，伦敦海事仲裁实践和1996年英国仲裁法均坚持进行合并仲裁须以当事人的明确协议为前提，但当事人对LMAA仲裁规则的选择适用亦属此类协议的范围，伦敦海事仲裁中的这一难题由此灵活而巧妙地得到了较为妥善的解决。

海事仲裁双方当事人协议将海事争议交由第三者仲裁的方法。当事人可以在合同中订立仲裁条款或事后达成仲裁协议，选择仲裁机构和仲裁员。仲裁员具有航海贸易及法律的专门知识。裁决一般是终局性的，对双方具有约束力，必须执行。如果一方对裁决有异议，拒不执行，另一方可提请法院强制执行。早在14世纪，地中海沿岸各港口采用的《海事法典》中就有裁决解决争议的规定。此后为多数国家所公认，其制度也日趋完善。目前国际上的主要海事仲裁机构有:巴黎海事仲裁院，伦敦海事仲裁协会，美国海事仲裁协会等。中国国际贸易促进委员会下的海事仲裁委员会，是中国解决涉外海事争议的常设机构，受理有关海上船舶救助、船舶碰撞及海上租赁、船舶代理或其他双方当事人要求仲裁的争议。
