50年代以前，航母由站在飞行甲板左端的着舰引导官（lso）双手持旗板打信号指挥飞机着舰。但喷气式飞机上舰以后，这种方法已不适用。1952年，英国海军中校格特哈特从女秘书对着镜子搽口红的动作中得到启发，设计出了早期的光学助降装置－－助降镜。它是一面大曲率反射镜，设在舰尾的灯光射向镜面再反射到空中，给飞行员提供一个光的下降坡面（与海平面夹角为3.5－4度），飞行员沿着这个坡面并以飞机在镜中的位置修正误差，直到安全降落。
60年代，英国又发明了更先进的“菲涅尔”透镜光学助降系统，它在原理上与助降镜相似，也是在空中提供一个光的下滑坡面，但这提供的信号更利于飞行员判断方位，修正误差。70年代，美国海军又研制出了全自动助降系统，它通过雷达测出飞机的实际位置，再根据航母自身的运动，由航母计算机得出飞机降落的正确位置，再在指令计算机中比较后发出误差信号，舰载机的自动驾驶仪依据信号修正误差，引导舰载机正确降落。
