国防部服役优秀勋章根据美国1976年2月6日的第11904号总统令而设立的国防部服役优秀勋章由国防部长授予美国武装部队中任何在国防部联合参谋部和其他三军联合部门中担负重任而功绩卓著的人员。国防部服役优秀勋章在等级顺序上介于银星勋章和功绩勋章/之间。凡在某一服役内已获得功绩勋章或类似勋章的任何个人不能再获得国防部服役优秀勋章。
