偶戏，在山西的传播历史悠久，这种相传为“傀儡戏”、“傀儡子”的民间戏曲，源于汉代，是由殉葬木俑演变发展而来的。山西省境内，木偶戏又分成提线和杖头两种形式。
清代末年，民国初年，山西境内的浮山、孝义等地木偶兴盛，浮山县有许多人以作偶制箱而闻名，这期间，山西出现了许多木偶戏艺人。
山西木偶戏的代表剧目有《通天河》、《火焰山》、《三打白骨精》、《孙悟空智取芭蕉扇》、《木偶杂技》、《草原红花》、《小卖瓜》、《夜半鸡叫》、《西游记》等。
木偶戏艺人一人多艺，操纵演唱配合密切，水乳交融。表演中，出台木偶挥刀动枪，舞拳弄棒、抖袍提袖、甩稍摆翅、耍扇抛彩、卸帽脱衣、吹胡子瞪眼、盘脚打座、摇头、跪、拜翻、跳等等，全凭艺人操纵。
