所谓“亚文学”，从传播介质的角度看，可分为纸质媒介、网络媒介和手机短信媒介三种类型。 在纸质媒介中，亚文学作品和传统文学非常接近，主要指既不被批评界认可为俗文学，更不被认可为雅文学的各种流行小说，如石康的《晃晃悠悠》、《一塌糊涂》，被批评家们命名为“美女写作”、“下半身写作”的作品，如《上海宝贝》、《啦啦啦》，还有所谓的“80后”青春写作，如韩寒、郭敬明、李傻傻、水格等人的作品。虽然纸媒亚文学是以被官方认可的方式出版发行的，但仍然受到批评界的大量诟病。 网络亚文学是亚文学的主要存在形态。实际上，很多纸媒文学，最早也是在网络上流传的。无法进入纸媒而只能存在于网络上的亚文学主要有如下几种形态：一是带有大量色情描写的情色小说，因其性质和图书管理制度的制约，无法进入纸媒文本；二是大量存在的论坛跟帖，由于其过于零散和分散而无法进入纸媒；再就是大量流传于网上的各种异类顺口溜，零敲碎打，且有些内容过于敏感，因此也只能停留在网络上。 最后一类就是手机短信亚文学，也被称为短信文学或拇指文学。近几年来，短信文学在电信公司的资本运作下，发展异常迅猛。各类短信文学评奖活动不断，许多著名作家也加入评委行列。如《天涯》杂志和海南在线“天涯社区”等单位曾联合举办过多次全国短信文学大赛。广东作家千夫长创作的4200字的手机小说《城外》，被电信运营商以18万元的高价买断版权，并由春风文艺出版社出版。短信写手戴鹏飞的号称“中国首部短信小说”的《谁让你爱上洋葱的》也由中国电影出版社出版，并被新浪网购得两年无线版权。创作《城外》的千夫长说，目前的人生状态是写长篇小说，但是他知道在这个享受物质生活的时代，我们采取各种手段招徕读者看一部厚重的长篇小说实在是有些残酷。千夫长说：“当下必将形成一个手机小说创作和阅读的时代，手机小说是由先进的技术决定的文学，是人类整个信息时代的阅读新方式。”目前，由于彩信的普及，短信文学的一个亚类——彩信文学也应运而生。据报道，由电信运营商举办的2005年首届彩信文学大赛业已揭晓。
