着重描写间谍冒险而有刺激性的特殊小说体裁。间谍故事已有了悠久的历史。自公元前6世纪起中国就有了关于反间用谍之策的兵书。julian symons称他所知的第一步间谍小说是j. fenimore cooper的《the spy》（1821）。现代间谍小说则发端于william le queux和erskine chiders（如《the riddle of the sands》，1903）。约瑟芬·康纳德（joseph conrad）所著《特工》（the secret agent，1907）为间谍小说增添一部力作，而john buchan写的两部小说《39级台阶》（the thirty-nine steps，1915）和《greenmantle》（1916）已成为经典之作。在两次世界大战期间，s·毛姆（w. somerset maugham）、eric ambler、格雷哈姆·格林（graham green）都写过纪实但并不惊险的间谍小说。此后，弗莱明（ian fleming）写的詹姆斯·邦德（james bond）富于浪漫主义的间谍小说和电影大放异彩。但是勒·卡雷（john le carré，如《the spy who came in from the cold》，1963）和len deighton（如《funeral in berlin》，1964）的作品则回到了更为写实的风格。 中国基本上没有间谍小说，只到一位神秘的网络作者杨恒均从2004年开始连续推出致命系列三部曲，才填补了这个空白。致命系列三部曲包括《致命弱点》《致命武器》和《致命追杀》，小说以中美台间谍斗争为主线，故事情节惊险，但小说仍然尊重山地情报机关的真实。小说推出后，不但弥补了中国间谍小说的空白，而且在网络上引起了很大的反响。
