文体名。序与跋的合称。序也作“叙”，或称“引”。一般说明书籍著述或出版宗旨、编辑体例和作者情况等，也可对作家作品进行评论，对有关问题进行研究阐发。这类文章，古代多列于书后，如《史记·太史公自序》、《汉书·叙传》等。后来一般置于书前，称为“序”，而将置于书后的称为“跋”，也称“后序”。“序”、“跋”体例大致相同，合称“序跋文”。
