性质:又称开放培养。与批式培养相对应。当微生物以批式培养方式培养到指数期(对数期)的后期时,一方面以一定速度连续流进新鲜培养基,另一方面经搅拌均匀后的培养物又经溢流方式不断流出培养器,从而使其能长时期进行连续生长和产生代谢产物。连续培养在实践过程中常分恒组分(chemostar)的恒浊培养(turbidostar)两种控制方式:前者是控制培养器中的某一化学组分,如碳源、氮源、溶解氧水平或pH值甚至产物的浓度维持一定水平;后者是控制细胞的浊度(反映细胞的浓度)维持一定水平。连续培养也可以在多个串联的培养器中进行,即新鲜培养液从第一个罐进入而成熟的培养液则从最后一个罐中流出,每一个维持不同水平的化学组分及细胞浓度水平。连续培养(发酵)技术已用于酵母菌、乙醇、乳酸和丙酮-丁醇等的生产,石油脱蜡,污水处理,以及生物学基础理论等研究,特别是研究细胞生长和产物形成的动力学中。
