指统一布局、纵横交织、既有分工又有协作的档案馆群体结构。一个国家比较完备的档案馆网，应包括从中央到地方各种类型的档案馆，它们之间应建立纵向和横向联系,互相沟通信息,交流业务经验，开展业务合作，建立馆际电子计算机检索网络。档案馆网的建立，以国家全部档案的科学分类为主要依据(见档案分类)。如按档案所属的历史时期建立专门的历史档案馆，按档案形成单位的级别建立中央级和地方各级档案馆，按档案所属的地区建立各行政区档案馆，按档案所属的不同专业部门建立专业部门档案馆等。世界不少国家根据本国国情规划和建立档案馆网，方式多种多样，但基本上是以综合性档案馆为主，配以各种专门性档案馆的结构，其中以苏联、中国等国的档案馆网较为完备(见苏联档案事业、中华人民共和国档案事业)。
