薯蓣科( Dioscoreaceae)薯蓣属多年生草本。又名大薯。块茎含淀粉和粗蛋白，可作粮食和蔬菜，并可制取淀粉和供药用。原产东南亚，现广泛分布于热带地区，尤以西非最多。中国广东、福建、台湾、浙江等省均有栽培。植株蔓生，茎蔓常呈方形，有翅。单叶对生，叶腋常有珠芽，俗称零余子。穗状花序，花单性。蒴果椭圆形，种子扁平，具薄膜状翅。块茎长圆柱形，圆锥形，薯肉白色、黄色或紫红色。要求气温25～30℃，年降雨量1500毫米以上且分布均匀，土壤疏松肥沃。用块茎或珠芽繁殖，穴栽，植距1×1米或0.5×2米。叶片枯黄脱落、茎蔓老朽时收获。
