利用计算机协助管理和指导教学过程。协助的对象主要是教师。通常CMI系统的功能有下列3种：①有关学生学习情况的收集和分析，在课内及时收集学生学习的反应数据，即学生回答问题的正误和回答速度等，并进行科学的统计分析，得出整个班级和每个学生的学习情况信息，供教师作教学安排的参考。②有关教学活动的监督与管理，协助教师安排学生的学习活动，监督其学习进度，记录学生的学习情况和生活情况，供教师参考。③有关作业的生成和批阅，各门课程的大量作业存贮在教学数据库中，可直接按教师的要求产生各个学习阶段的作业，打印发给学生，经计算机"批阅"后给出评价意见。这项工作既可脱机进行，也可联机进行。
