①根据西南地区经济建设和科技发展的需要，重点收藏综合性科技、新兴技术和实用技术等方面的文献资料；②编译出版检索类和技术类科技情报刊物；③研建有关能源技术、计算机技术、情报科学文献数据库以及苏联、东欧国家科技发展事实数据库，编制西南地区外文科技期刊联合目录；④开展科技情报检索和国际联机检索服务；⑤承担国家委托的情报调研任务，针对地方科技与经济发展的需要，开展综合性调查研究；⑥开展信息咨询与定题服务；⑦组织情报教育与培训工作。

重庆分所馆藏文献：外文科技期刊 1.5万种、中文科技期刊6000种、专利文献 700万件、标准文献19万件、产品样本说明书 6.4万份、图书 31 万册、检索工具书1300种、各种手册2.8万册、缩微胶卷 7000盒、缩微平片 7.3万张；重庆分所现有微型计算机8台、IBM4381－M11计算机1台，国际联机检索终端机2台。
