①中国各级各类学校教师的通称（见教师）。②高等学校尚未正式确定学衔或职务名称的教师。按1960年3月5日中华人民共和国国务院颁发的《关于高等学校教师职务名称及其确定与提升办法的暂行规定》第十条规定：机关团体的工作人员、科学研究人员、工程技术人员、文化艺术工作人员、归国留学生、中等学校教师和其他人员，调到高等学校任教的时候，应该经过一定时期的考察,再根据政治条件和业务水平,适当地确定他们的职务名称。在未确定职务名称以前，暂称为教员。教员在考察一定时期以后,经过一定手续的评议和批准,可以确定他们为讲师、副教授或教授（见《关于高等学校教师职务名称及其确定与提升办法的暂行规定》）。
